Horror-A-Day: Day Sixteen

This movie is not for the squeamish or the overly sensitive viewer. Or even the mildly sensitive viewer. This movie had quite a few holy shit moments for me. Martyrs is about two girls, one named Lucie, who escaped from people who were severly torturing her, and one named Anna, who Lucie befriended at the orphanage she was sent to after her escape. Fifteen years later, Lucie is still haunted by a woman who was also being abused, but couldn't save when she made her escape. Lucie finds the husband and wife who imprisoned the both of them, and kills them and their teenage children. Pascal Laugier, the writer and director, makes an interesting choice of showing the family for a few minutes and having us see them have breakfast, so they seem perfectly normal. It is because of this that when Lucie comes in and starts shooting them, it is really shocking and it seems so horrible. It isn't until later in the movie that we see that the husband and wife got exactly what they deserved. Anna goes looking around their house and finds a woman in their basement who is badly cut up, starving, and has a metal thing that is sort of nailed to her head and covering her eyes. I'm not going to go into detail about the rest of the movie, but I will say that this is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen, and the end of this movie is quite shocking.
