Movie I Want To See: Saw 3D

This will be the first Saw movie I have ever seen in theaters. Up until a few months ago, the only one I had seen was the first one because I though all of the sequels looked really stupid. The only reason I did see the sequels was because my sister bought a dvd pack of all 6 Saw movies and we watched them all within a one week span. While they may not be the best movies in the world, I have to admit they are entertaining. So, even though the main reason I want to see this movie is because newly crowned Scream Queen Gabby West will be in it, I am also a little curious about what happens next in the story. Also, I want to find out if I can watch what is sure to be an ultraviolent movie in 3D without having a panic attack. I remember I saw this Terminator movie in 3D at Universal Studios when I was really little and I couldn't even look at the screen I was so scared. Of course, it has been over 10 years since then, probably like 13 or 14 years, but I'm still curious as to how I'll react.

Scream Queens: Season Finale

I just got done watching the entire season finale of Scream Queens season two, and Gabby definitely deserved to win! I mean, Jessica did good in the directors challenge, but it wasn't anything special and Gabby was a lot more memorable to me. Like I said in my first post about Scream Queens, Gabby is just really interesting to watch.

This season finale was basically the same as last season's season finale. The first challenge was a scene that required running from a bad guy, then going from victim to hero and defeating him. The second challenge was one that was inspired by a scene from one of the Saw movies. Last season was based on a scene from Saw 3 and this season was from the original Saw. I think that they all did really good in the first challenge, so it must have been really tough for them to choose who to send home first. It ended up being Christine though, because they said that she was too much of a victim.  Then in the second challenge they had to be trapped in a room knowing that their sister was in danger. Gabby totally rocked it, and did an amazing job, and that is ultimately why she ended up winning!!!

Scream Queens: YES YES YES YES YES OMFG!!!!

I am so happy right now!!! Gabby West, my favorite contestant throughout the whole season has won the title of Scream Queen and the role in Saw 3D!!!! AWESOME!!!!! I don't have tv, so I have to watch the show online, and I was pissed that they didn't have the entire episode online, but fortunatly they had clips of the show, and while I didn't get to see Gabbys first challenge or the majority of the directors challenge, I did get to see her win. You can read her interview about being the winner here. I am so excited for Saw 3D now! It will be the only Saw movie I've seen in theaters...I just looked at her IMDB page, and while Saw 3D isn't on there yet (probably due to the show), I see that shes going to be in the remake of Fright Night, and a TV movie called The Odds. UGH THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!! GO GABBY!!!

100 Years of Frankenstein in Film

Since reading yesterday that Guillermo del Toro was making a new adaptation of Frankenstein, I've been thinking about all of the other Frankenstein movies, and how many different actors have played the famous monster. Here are some of the more well-known ones.

1. Charles Ogle (Edison Studio's Frankenstein, 1910)

Its been 100 years since the very first film adaption of Mary Shelley's story. This film features Charles Ogle as the monster, and is a really short movie. Its interesting because the monster gets made by putting a bunch of powder in the giant tub, and is sort of put together by magic. In my opinion, the monster looks sort of ridiculous in this film, with his big ratty hair and his clown shoes, but I'll give him a break because this was a century ago.

2. Boris Karloff (Frankenstein 1931, Bride of Frankenstein 1935, Son of Frankenstein 1939)

Boris Karloff is definitely the most well-known off all the actors who've played Frankenstein's monster, and with good reason. Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein are arguably two of the greatest films of all time, and not just in the horror genre and that is mostly due to an excellent performance by Mr. Karloff. These movies also have the more well known way of creating the monster, with the use of lightning. In the book, Mary Shelley never says how the monster is made, so using lightning is just a Hollywood invention.. Boris Karloff is my favorite classic horror actor, and here is one of the best scenes in Frankenstein. This scene is really sad, and not just because of what happened to the little girl, but because the monster has no idea what he has done.


3. Lon Cheney Jr. (Ghost of Frankenstein, 1942)

Lon Cheney Jr. is more well-known for playing Lawrence Talbot (aka The Wolf Man), but he also played my favorite Universal monster.

4. Bela Lugosi (Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, 1943)

Remember that scene in Tim Burton's movie Ed Wood where Bela Lugosi (played by Martin Landau) was talking crap about Karloff playing the monster? "Its all grunting and make-up..." I always laugh during that scene because Mr. Lugosi has been in several Frankenstein movies. He's played Ygor (my favorite Lugosi character, better than Dracula in my opinion), and, of course, the monster. I read somewhere that they cut all of his lines in this movie because people didn't want to hear the moster speak with a Hungarian accent.

5. Glenn Strange (House of Frankenstein 1944, House of Dracula 1945, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein 1948)

Glenn Strange was the last person to play Frankenstein's monster in the old Universal Frankenstein series of films. I saw on this documentary once that in Boris Karloff's obituary, they actually put in a picture of Glenn Strange by mistake.

6. Christopher Lee (The Curse of Frankenstein, 1957)

In the late 50s and 60s, Hammer Films made a bunch of really great horror films, the best of them being The Curse of Frankenstein starring Peter Cushing (known to nerds like me as Grand Moff Tarkin) as the scientist Frankenstein and Christopher Lee as his creation. I like this film because it makes out the scienctist out to be more of a monster than the creature, which in my opinion is definitely the case. I mean, he works like hell to make a man, and then when he does he completely disowns him and doesn't even give him a name. Here's the scene from the movie where the creature comes to life.


7. Peter Boyle (Young Frankenstein, 1974)

Young Frankenstein is one of the funniest movies ever made, and is, in my opinion, the best Mel Brooks film. it is a parody of all of the old Universal horror films, and features Gene Wilders best performance as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (or Fronkensteen), as well as hilarious performaces by Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, and Peter Boyle as the creature. I've seen this movie a million or so times since I was a kid, and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it. Here is what is probably the most well known scene.


8. Robert De Niro (Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, 1994)

Although it didn't get very good reviews, I actually really like this movie. I think that Robert De Niro does a fantastic job as the monster, and it really showcases how amazing he is as an actor. I also like this movie because even there there are a lot of differences, this movie is the closest to the novel that I have seen.

9. Shuler Hensley (Van Helsing, 2004)

This movie is a nice little tribute to classic Universal monsters. In Van Helsing, the creature is portrayed as all victim and is not at all a villian. The majority of the story is about keeping the creature away from Dracula because Dracula wants to use him to give life to his little mutant bat children since he is the "key" to his father's machine.

I'm pretty sure the universe has been reading my mind because one of my favorite film directors is adapting one of my all-time favorite stories, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I mean, what could be more perfect than that? I guess its not going to made for quite a while because Guillermo del Toro has a million other projects lined up, including The Hobbit, but I bet that it will be worth waiting for. I don't think that there is a single movie that he has made that I didn't like. Pan's Labrynth, The Devil's Backbone, and Hellboy are all fantastic! I read that its not going to be a literal adaptation, but more of an interpretation of the classic story. I also read that the monster's make-up will be based on the drawings done by Bernie Wrightson for the illustrated version of Frankenstein, and that the moster will be played by, of course, Doug Jones. Doug Jones has played Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies, Pan and the Pale Man in Pan's Labrynth, and the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four 2. I'm pretty sure that out of all those movies, the only one where you hear his actual voice is Hellboy 2 because someone else dubs the characters voices in the other ones. Scream Queens: Top Three

It is really getting down to the wire now. Episode 7 Tai got the axe, so now its down to the top three girls. I don't know if that means that there are one or two episodes left. Last season I think that they had the top three in the last episode, so next week I might find out who gets the role in Saw 3D. So, heres the top three:



Christine

I really like Christine, but I don't think that she has a chance to win this show at all. She did really good on the directors challenge in episode 6, and has done okay is most of the challenges, but there are some challenges that she just did really bad in. For example, the western vampire challenge was aweful. She was supposed to be the villian, but she just comes across as too cute. The insane asylum challenge had the exact same problem, especially when she started yelling, "terror!" It wasn't coming across as insanity, it was coming across more comical to me. She's really not that great at being the bad guy, but my guess is that the role in Saw 3D is a victim role, which I think that she would be fine in if by some chance she ends up winning the whole thing, which is very unlikely. To be honest, I'm suprised that she made it to the top three. Even though I really didn't like Tai, I thought that Christine did worse that her in the director's challenge and that she should've been the one that got sent home. So, it is my opinion that Christine will get the axe in episode 8, and end up gettin third place.



Jessica

Jessica is really good, and is probably the one girl who does consistently well on her challenges. She has won leading lady more times that any other contestant, and has never been in the bottom two. She has been the front runner on this show since the very first episode and continues to do really well on all of her challenges. Having said that, I really just do not want her to win. She is getting so cocky, which was really apparent in episode 7. I mean, yeah, shes been doing really good, but theres this thing called humbleness that I think she should try. She really pissed me off during the girls' session with John Homa when she started crying and whining because Gabby got to have another turn. I'm just like, "are you in elementary school?" "are you really going to whine and cry about this?" Honestly, I was really happy to see that she wasn't little miss perfect for once.

Now, onto my favorite contestant, Gabby. Even though its more than likely going to be Jessica that wins, I really, really, really hope that its Gabby. She has had some rough patches, especially when dealing with technical aspects of scenes, but when she is good, she is really good. I thought she did amazing in the director's challenges when she was the girl who kills her boyfriend, the girl who gets thrown around by a ghost, and the girl who's in the insane asylum. I think shes great because even though shes pretty, she can be scary and insane. I am not that big of a fan of the Saw franchise, but if she wins I will definitely want to see Saw 3D. She would make that movie a million times better. Since she is my favorite, I'll post a bunch of pics of her...

My Review: Going the Distance and Easy A

Okay, so today I had a seven hour window between classes, and instead of waiting around in Coffman Memorial Union forever and ever, I decided to go downtown and see a little double feature (I still have two hours till class, btw). Originally I was going to see Easy A then Devil, but my Ojibwe oral quiz went a little longer than planned, so I missed the beginning of Easy A. At first I was going to wait till 12:45 and see Salt, but I really didn't want to wait an hour so I had to choose between Resident Evil: Extinction and Going the Distance. Since the only R.E. movie I've seen is the first one, I decided to see Going the Distance at 11:50, then see Easy A at 2:00.
Even though I thought the trailer was funny and I really like Drew Barrymore, I didn't really have any desire to see Going the Distance in theaters because I'm not really that big of a fan of romantic comedies. I ended up really liking it, though. It has a fantastic cast of actors that I really like such as Ms Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jim Gaffigan, and Christina Applegate. It also has a cameo by Kristen Schaal who is in it for like two seconds, but manages to be absolutely hilarious.
Going the Distance is about two people, Erin and Garrett, (Barrymore and Long) who meet at a bar in New York and hit it off right away. They have a really great night together, but unfortunately, Erin is only in NY for another 6 weeks, then she flies back to San Francisco. So, the whole movie is about trying to make their long distance relationship work. This seems like a normal cheesy romcom, but this movie is actually really funny. Most romcoms feature some uptight girl and some carefree guy, who start out hating eachother but end up falling in love, and usually aren't that funny. Their source of comedy is like, "oh haha the uptight girl got drunk" or "haha the uptight girl is having a mental breakdown." These kinds of romantic comedies (usually starring Katherine Heigl), are the majority of the time not that funny, and if they are its usually the guy who gets to be funny. Going the Distance, however, kept me laughing throughout the whole movie. I was sitting in the theater all by myself laughing hysterically. Drew Barrymore is great in the scene where she gets really drunk with her hot guy friend and starts fighting with this muscular guy after she ends up almost hitting him with a dart, and continues to yell at him when her friend is literally carrying her out of the bar. Only she can make the work fuck adorable. Justin Long is also funny, but I love Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as his two best friends. I was really excited when I saw that they were in this movie because Charlie is my favorite character from Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and I used to watch SNL all the time.
One thing that bothered me about this movie was when I thought Erin was going to turn down the job in San Francisco. She mentions a million times about how the newspaper business is doing shitty, so it pissed me off when she was going to turn down an actual newspaper job so she could move to New York and wait tables. Fortunately, though, the movie has a nice happy ending with everbody getting what they want.
My rating: 9/10

This movie, however, I was not too fond of. I liked the trailer, and I thought that it was going to be a cute, funny teen movie, that also has a good cast. While I do like most of the actors in this movie, it really wasn't all that funny. Or funny at all to be exact. This movie was more rediculous than anything.
Easy A is a movie about a girl named Olive played by Emma Stone, who lies to her friend about losing her virginity to some college guy. Someone overhears, and then everyone in the school knows. Then a gay guy asks her to pretend to sleep with him so people will think hes straight, so they go in a room at a party and grunt and moan and everyone thinks they had sex. So, a bunch of other guys pay her to do the same. Anyways, rumors go around the school that Olive is a big whore, and she has no problem with it! She says something like "being known as a whore is better than not being known at all" or something stupid like that. First of all, I don't know how they expect me to believe that someone as cute as Emma Stone could be "invisible." They don't even do the cliched thing of putting glasses on her or anything like that. Second of all, I don't know why any girl would want to be known first as a whore, then as a prostitite, then as an STD infested prostitute whore. She's doing all of these favors for people because she feels bad for them, because they're fat or getting beat up, but they're treating her like a prostitute because they're paying her to ruin her reputation.
What really pisses me off about this movie is her god damn parents! I like Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci, but their characters are so stupid! They seem to have no problem with their teenage daughter wearing skin tight corsets to school or that there are all these rumors about her going around. Theres even a part where Olive's like "if you hear anything about me having chlamydia, don't belive it," and they're just like "okay..." I'm like "WHAT!?!?!?!" If my mom had ever heard anything about me having an STD she would be PISSED! She probably would have grounded me for the rest of my high school career and then murdered me. I understand that they are supposed to be the "cool and understanding" parents, but they are just rediculous! There's even a part where her mom tells her that she was a whore in high school and that she could lift her legs over her head, and Olive just laughs it off like she told her a little joke or something. I mean, what kind of mother tells her daughter something like that???
I guess this movie's trying to be "edgy" or something, but it just comes across as dumb. I mean theres a teacher who gives chlamydia to a 22 year old high schooler (really!?!), and a group of super religious students who sing bible songs on the front lawn of the school, and picket against Olive (REALLY!?!) The ending is just as stupid. Throughout the whole movie Olive is doing a webcast explaining that all of the rumors are just lies, and at then end of the movie she convinces everyone to watch the webcast by doing a musical number (really!?!) during a pep rally dressed like a burlesque dancer and then telling people that they would be watching her have sex during the webcast. I mean, jesus christ, THATS how you're going to start fixing your reputation?
So I don't seem like a complete hater, I'll think of some things that I like about this movie. Lets see... It has a really good cast. Emma Stone is really cute and likable, and while I don't think that she should have turned down a role in Sucker Punch to be in this movie, it was probably a better move for her career because this is a starring role and I believe that the role she was going to have in Sucker Punch was more of a supporting one. I also really like Patricia Clarkson, Stanley Tucci, Thomas Haden Church, and Lisa Kudrow, even though I don't like their characters in this movie. Also, I can't believe Malcolm McDowell was in this. Why would Alex DeLarge agree to play the principal in this shitty teen movie? Ok...good things.... Penn Badgley is hot, so thats a plus. Also I though this part of the movie was kind of cute, and it was funny that this was her ringtone for the rest of the movie.

Movie I Want To See: Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark

Holy hell! I just watched this trailer for the first time, and it scared the fuck out of me! I watched it in my room, with all of my lights on, on my tiny ass labtop, and it still made me scream, not once, but twice. Well, the first time I felt really stupid because I screamed when the word DON'T came on the screen, but at the end....ugh...scary!!!!! Gosh, good thing I didn't see this in a movie theater... Anyways, I already really wanted to see this movie because I am a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro. The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labrynth are fantastic movies, and I also really like Hellboy. This movie is not directed by him, but he is producing it and unless I am mistaken, I believe that he wrote the screenplay as well. I'm also really happy that it has Guy Pearce, because he is one of my favorite actors. Unfortunately, this movie doesn't come out till January, but I know that it'll be worth the wait.

Favorite Music Videos Based On Horror Films

Rob Zombie: Living Dead Girl

Rob Zombie usually incorporates things from horror films into both his songs and music videos, and this is my favorite of all of his videos. This video is based on the silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. If you have seen the film (which I have), then when you watch this video you can see right away what its supposed to be based on. As you can see in the photo from the 1922 silent film, the video even uses basically the same set design, which is the most recognizable thing from the movie in the music video.

30 Seconds To Mars: The Kill

This music video is based on the Stanley Kubrick film The Shining. I am not that big of a 30 Seconds to Mars fan, but I really like this video. The main reason is that I really love The Shining and I think that its a great film to give homage to, but I also love that it didn't use the most obvious parts of The Shining (guy with axe, kid on tricycle), and that it used parts like when the you see a man and a guy in a bear costume in a room together. (photo from The Shining shown). You see it only for a second in the movie, but its one of the weirder moments, and it neat to see it in the video.


Backstreet Boys: Everybody (Backstreet's Back)

I know that it's totally dorky that I have this video on here, but this was my favorite video when I was in elementary school. I was a Backstreet Boys girl all the way, and I hated NSYNC. Say what you will about their music, but I still think that this video is pretty cool. It pays homage to the classic Universal monsters The Wolf Man, Dracula, The Mummy, The Phantom of the Opera, and what I assume is supposed to be The Creature of the Black Lagoon. So, it has all of them except for Frankenstein's monster, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. Of course, you could argue that The Invisible Man is in this video but you just can't see him. My favorite is Brian as the Wolf Man. He looks awesome as a werewolf and it starts the song out really well. I always end up laughing during this video, though because of how 90s it is. The most 90s thing about this video is probably the fact that Howie is wearing Tommy Hilfiger overalls which i think is hilarious.



Michael Jackson: Thriller

Then, of course, there is Thriller. This is arguably the greatest music video of all time. No, not even arguably, its just straight up the best video ever. This vid was directed by John Landis who also directed An American Werewolf in London, which is one of the best werewolf movies in history. So, it of course starts out with a werewolf, and, as everyone in the entire world is familiar with, ends up with a bunch of dancing zombies. I don't think that its based on any zombie movie in particular, so we could say that its based on all zombie movies. What is really cool is that Vincent Price does the narration part in the song, and he is one of the greatest horror actors of all time. Hes been in such great films as House of Wax, House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler, and his last film appearance ever was in Edward Scissorhands as the inventor.

My Review: Piranha

At first I was pissed that the theater that I went to didn't have this movie in 3D, but now that I've seen it I'm really glad that it didn't. If I saw this movie in 3D I probably would've pissed my pants. I'm already terrified of fish, so when you have carnivorous, sharp-toothed fish that attack in packs...well...it makes me more than a little nervous.
I give this movie props for starting out with a little homage to Jaws with Richard Dreyfuss fishing and singing "Show me the way to go home...I'm tired and I want to go to bed." Then, there is an earthquake which releases a bunch of piranha that end up biting poor Mr. Dreyfuss to death. So, eventually the sheriff, played by Elizabeth Shue realizes that the lake is infested with these piranha and decides to close the lake which is a big problem because its spring break and the lake is full of stupid college kids. So, as you can probably guess, I bunch of fish-related gore ensues. This movie has an excess of two things, the first being boobs, and the second being blood. Once those piranha start attacking the area with all of the college kids, it is one bloody mess. I have to give props to who ever did the make-up for this movie because all of the wounds looked absolutely disgusting and awesome. I probably would have been even more impressed if I wasn't having a damn panic attack the whole movie. I was literally sitting with my jacket wrapped around the bottom part of the face for the majority of it. Yuck yuck yuck I hate fish. This movie is basically my worst nightmare. I would rather be attacked by zombies and vampires then nasty ass fish. At least those things I can run away from. Fish have a huge advantage over people in the water, especially me, because I am not that great of a swimmer. Plus, with piranha, you won't even be able to see them coming, and once they're ready to attack you there's no way to stop them. So, yeah, as you can see this movie freaked me out. There was this one part that really pissed me off. This guy voluntarily jumped in the piranha infested water to save this girl. I'm just like, "NO!" I don't care how pretty Jessica Szohr is, if I was that guy I would just leave that girl to die because there is no way that I would ever go in that water. FUCK. THAT.
Anyways, this movie wasn't make to win any Oscars, but is still an enjoyable movie, nevertheless. It had a little suprise ending that will probably lead to a bunch of really shitty sequels featuring ginormous piranhas and more scantily clad college girls. My rating: 7/10

Just Finished Reading: The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest

I am a huge fan of Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy. Having read and loved the first two books, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fired, I of course had to buy the third book, and it did not disappoint. It picks up where the second book left off, with Lisbeth Salander discovered injured by Blomkvist after being shot by her father and buried alive by her brother. She gets taken to the hospital, which is where she spends the majority of the book. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets nest is basically about Blomkvist proving Lisbeth's innocence and exposing the truth about her father, Zalachenko, and "The Section" which is a secret organization inside of Sapo, the Swedish secret police.
I mostly read this book when I had time in between classes, and I would get so into it that I would often get annoyed when I had to stop and go to class. Normally when books have a lot of characters I get confused and start to mix them up, but for this book it was different. There are tons of characters in this book, but I found it easy to remember who was who because I find them all very interesting. My favorite characters being (of course) Lisbeth Salander, and Erika Berger. Lisbeth is a great character not only because of her more interesting aspects (computer hacking, photographic memory), but because even though she is distrustful to everyone around her and has problems with human interaction, she has all of these people who stick their neck out and even put themselves in danger for her; Blomkvist being the main example of that. What is he getting out of it? Why do all of this for someone who for the longest time refused to see or speak to him? I mean, he said it himself, that he considered himself her friend but she didn't herself to be his friend.
I'm bummed that this is the last book in the Millenium Series.This book ended on a good note with Lisbeth and Mikael finally getting to talk face to face, but I really want to know what happens next. I guess I'll never know...
Anyways, now that I'm done with the books I'm curious to see if the movies are any good. I haven't seen any of the Swedish ones, though The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has been at the top of my Netflix queue for for-fuckin-ever. For some reason its still at "Long Wait." A lot of people were pissed that they're making American film versions of the books, but I think that they'll be pretty good. They'll be directed by David Fincher, who I really like, and they seem to have good casting so far (even though I don't really know about Rooney Mara as Salander, but as I said before I'm gonna wait til I see The Social Network to make any judgements on that matter).

Sucker Punch Photos

Out of all of the upcoming movies, the one that I am the most excited to see, by far, is Sucker Punch! It is directed by Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead remake, 300, Watchmen), and doesn't come out til March. LAME!!! So...until then, here are some awesome Sucker Punch photos.
